Not Just For Babies and Gallstones Anymore...

In the fall of 2007 STAR Flight and Brackenridge Trauma Services initiated a controlled retrospective study to investigate the potential benefit of using ultrasonographic peripheral IV placement in the aeromedical environment.  The IRB (Independant Review Board) approved study is looking at aspects of training, competency, proficiency, need for the skill and appropriateness of environment.  We will enroll 100 total patients during the study and the results will be examined then published.

In 2008, we are set to being another similar ultrasonographic study examining the potential benefit of pre-hospital FAST exams.  That study currently has IRB approval and the initial crew member training is ongoing.
