The American Heroes Air Show is a complete success! We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to come out to the Texas Military Forces’ Camp Mabry for the show. Attendance was very impressive for the first year in Austin at 3000. We had all 10 aircraft make it in despite some low clouds early on. The crowds were already building as the aircraft started to arrive. The Civil Air Patrol, under the direction of our Air Boss, Mike Gregersen, did a fine job of getting them into their places safely. The Apache from the 21st Cavalry at Ft. Hood always draws a crowd. We also had aircraft from STAR Flight, APD’s Air One, PHI, DPS, and San Antonio AirLife. The Texas Military Forces’ was on site with a Blackhawk medi-vac and an OH-58 from the Counter Drug Task Force. The Austin Police Department Search and Rescue K-9 team put on a number of crowd pleasing demonstrations. There was also an exceptional display of public safety / SAR equipment from Austin-Travis County EMS, Austin Fire Department, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and Texas Task Force 1 to name a few. We collected 1100+ pounds of food for the Capital Area Food Bank. The Blood and Tissue center of Central Texas will be able to save countless lives with the donations they received. The Scouts providing concessions also did very well. We had the pleasure of meeting three of the real heroes from Austin: Houston McCoy, Jerry Day and Phillip Conner. These are the gentleman that went above and beyond when they ended the stand-off at the UT Tower by shooting Charles Whitman in 1966. Ricky Calmbach played multiple acoustic sets throughout the day to add the Texas Touch to our Air Show. We should have a date set for next year soon!
